LANSING – May 17th is always a big day in the capital city. The numerical value of the date, 5/17, matches the beloved area code of the Greater Lansing region (517), and is a day reserved for the city of Lansing to celebrate itself and the culture that thrives within its limits. “517 Day” is for the city to show how vibrant it can be, and 2024’s celebration of the day will bring some major partying, new product drops from one of the biggest brands in the 517, new music from some of Lansing’s favorite artists, and that's not all. Next Up celebrated 517 Day at the Lansing Shuffle, where Mayor Andy Schor joined us and many others in celebration of the annual day of vibes. The day featured many different activities and attractions, and we’ve got you covered on how it went below!

Soul Luncheon:

517 Day got rocking early at one of Lansing’s hottest venues, the Lansing Shuffle. The Soul Luncheon kicked off festivities with several local singers and one national performer jamming to some of our favorite tracks. Lansing artists Maddie Whitney, Lucas Holliday, and Candace Potts joined national recording artist and actor Quan Howell (Tyler Perry Productions) on center stage at The Shuffle. They sang classic R&B songs while the crowd dined at one of the several food places available inside The Lansing Shuffle.

The highlight: While all the performers who graced the stage were amazing, Quan Howell lit it up with his amazing vocals when he hit the stage – or the floor, since he performed in the crowd. We caught up with Mr. Howell after the performance:

Ribbon-cutting for one-of-a-kind new Lansing shuffleboard courts:

The Lansing Shuffle finally introduced its flagship element to the public on 517 Day. Shuffleboard courts were officially opened to the public with free rounds of play, allowing those without prior playing knowledge to get a great feel for how to play the game. The courts come with their own separate bar and an outdoor patio space for lounging. The courts are set to be the main attraction of the Riverfront hotspot and will attract people from all around the region to the Lansing Shuffle. Next Up Michigan caught up with Lansing Mayor Andy Schor after the ribbon cutting:

517 Day Fest:

The evening was dominated by local vendors and music. East Lansing’s School of Rock put on amazing performances on the main stage, keeping the crowd moving with their renditions of classic rock tracks. Outdoors, dozens of local businesses had tents set up for shopping and community engagement. Anything from skin services to crafted ornaments was available for pretty much the entire afternoon on the riverfront.
